Mac Incorrectly Reporting Hard Drive as FullMac hard drives sometimes show unexpected behavior related to hard disk space. Users report that though the hard disk has fair amount of free space available, it incorrectly reports being full. As the Mac hard drive fails to correctly deal with free hard disk space, this result into issues like failing to accommodate more files. Users are suggested to take full data backup in such cases as solution may require formatting the affected drive. However in case of backup failure, Mac Recovery solutions offer the best cure.
Mac file systems (Hierarchical File System family of file systems) use different metadata structures to index data on the drive, which include Extent Overflow, Catalog, Allocation, Master Directory Block (MDB) etc. From practical perspective, these index files reference to the written data. Thus Mac operating system needs not to look whole disk for accessing data, just traversing the directory trees will do.
When the file is deleted, its only file indexes that get deleted and not the real data. The data blocks becomes available to be overwritten and is marked as unreserved or unused (only when user deletes file or empties Trash Bin). But if operating system is still taking the unused disk space as reserved, the issue could be faulty volume file system information.
Solution
Above discussed points conclude that disk should be repaired. Using Disk Utility, we can ensure about correct file system structure and its index files.
Free disk space can be zeroed after checking file system integrity. To carry out this, we can select the volume, in question, in Disk Utility and select Erase (tab) -> Erase Free Space->Zero Out Deleted Files. It is feasible in Leopard.
As a last resort, we can reformat the drive and restore all the data from backup.
Mac Recovery
Data Recovery Mac is required when user loses data while no valid data backup is available. So before actually formatting te drive, data backup log reports and media must be well-checked for integrity. In case of no backup availability, Data Recovery Mac applications can help extracting lost information from affected drives. These are the specific scanning tools to recover lost data.
